Although mate is traditionally a hot drink, it also comes in its refreshing version, called “terere”, ideal for quenching your thirst in summer. It is a healthier and more affordable option than most other drinks available on the market.
What is terere?
It is a drink made from mate herbs, water and ice cubes that is generally consumed in summer in Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. It is not uncommon to add aromatic herbs, such as mint or lemon verbena, or natural flavors, such as grapefruit or lemon, even if, to taste this drink, many drinkers of terere opt for the quick and easy solution by adding a powdered juice.
A survey carried out by El Mathe brought out some very interesting results regarding the consumption of mate in the summer:
- 40% of Argentines drink terere and three out of ten admit that they drink it more and more.
- This drink is becoming more and more popular among young people: one in two Argentines aged 18 to 34 drinks terere in summer.
How to prepare a good terere for the summer?
To prepare a good orange or lemon flavored terere, you can use the same container you usually use to drink your traditional mate, but a glass can also do the trick. Pour the mate grass into the container, shake it a little so that the powder does not remain in the bottom. Next, prepare the powdered juice in a large thermos or jug with cold water and lots of ice cubes.
First, pour enough orange juice into the chosen container so that the mate herb is completely soaked, then let it sit for a few minutes. Then place the bombilla and add some ice cubes. Your terere is ready, you can now enjoy it!
The benefits of terere
Who says high heat, says dehydration, which is why teréré is ideal for quenching your thirst. In addition, it has the already known benefits of mate grass: it is an antioxidant, purgative, stimulant, ideal for preventing diseases and improving general health. It is the perfect drink to quench your thirst, whatever the age and the occasion.
